{Baby Davis} Week 14 + Cold Remedies

Date:: April 2, 2013

How far along:: 14 weeks

Gender:: Unknown

Movement:: None that I can feel.

Symptoms::
~ Still much more energy and no nausea. I'm even back to eating cooked vegetables.

Craving:: I finally got my hands on some pickles without artificial ingredients! Our local farmer's market opened up for the fall, and the first things I bought were jars of homemade kosher dill and bread and butter pickles. No yellow #5! And yes, I've been eating them straight from the jar.

Looking Forward To:: This weekend we're having a short photo session with our photographer to capture early pregnancy pictures. The best part? We'll be at the pumpkin patch!

Fun Baby Fact::
Baby is as long as a navel orange. I can't imagine something as big as that inside my belly! I know he/she is all curled up and snugly inside, but sometimes it's still so hard to imagine. Especially on the days when I don't feel like I'm showing very much.

Weekly Development::
~ Baby's ears are now in the proper position on the side of his/her head, rather than down on the neck.
~ The eyes are moving from the side of the head to the front of the face (thank goodness!)
~ Baby now has the coordination and strength to wiggle fingers and toes AND suck his/her thumb (awww!)

Emotions:: Calm, peaceful, satisfied, anticipating the future

Best Moment of the Week::
~ Michael shared a dream he had one night. In his dream we had a sweet little blond headed boy who was simply perfect. I can't wait for this dream to become a reality, whether it's a boy or a girl!

I've had a terrible head cold this week that started with a sore throat last Sunday and is still ongoing today with a sinus headache and coughing. I can honestly say there are few things worse than needing to take medicine but can't due to pregnancy. This week has been completely miserable! I finally did end up calling my doctor, and he said I could take any kind of Tylenol and two kinds of liquid Robitussin. Since then my cold has gotten a bit better, but is not gone by any means.

All of this to say, I tried some home remedies this week to alleviate my symptoms without having to ingest the actual medicine. To all my fellow pregnant friends out there, or even if you're not pregnant but are tired of taking the same antibiotics, maybe these remedies will help you too!
For sore throat:
Mix 1 tsp liquid Benadryl with 1 tsp hydrogen peroxide and 1 tsp mouthwash. Gargle frequently. The benadryl numbs your throat and knocks out the scratchy, tickling feeling while the peroxide kills the bacteria living there that are causing the sore throat. The mouthwash is just to make the taste a bit more bearable.

For congested sinuses/stuffy or runny nose:
Mix one coffee mug of warm water with 1 tsp salt until the salt has dissolved. Not sure what you call the blue thing in the picture, I've always called it a nose bubble because that's the only thing I've used it for. Fill the nose bubble with warm salt water and squirt in each nostril, blowing nose each time. This will flush out built up mucus. Do this three to four times daily.

By the way, each of these "home remedies" were recommended to my mom years ago by our family physician. His advice- try these frequently for three days, and if the cold has not been alleviated, come back to his office for prescription meds.

Oh, and soaking in a hot bath has been helpful, too. (Really, what ailment isn't helped by a hot bath?) Also, my mother-in-law sent a prepared casserole one night that all I had to do was heat in the oven, and my sister cooked dinner for us another night. Those two things helped me rest! And I can't forget to add I've been eating lots of oranges and drinking as much orange juice as possible (good thing I like it right now!).

Please note: these suggestions are not to replace your doctor's instructions. As always, if you're pregnant, make sure you check with your doctor before consuming any type of medicine.
