I just have to show off what I did this evening! My first graders are being introduced to contractions this week, so I decided to make this little matching activity to supplement their learning. It's pretty self-explanatory as you can see from the pictures, but basically I wrote the contractions on one half of the card and the two words that make it up on the other half. Then I cut the card in the middle like a puzzle piece. I made a set of 15 different contractions. They're not all pictured, but you get the idea! My students will separate the pieces and attempt to match them with their partner. To self check, I made sure that each card was cut in a different pattern, so that the halves will only match with it's correct partner. I then laminated the cards so that I can keep and use them for years to come(like any good, sensible teacher!). And of course, I had to use my fall leaves that I just bought at the teacher supply store this weekend... I love how whenever I laminated them the colors seemed to become so much brighter and richer. Oh, and I love how my laminating machine smells.... Anyway, sometimes I get so excited about what I do for my students that I have to share! We'll see how they like my little game tomorrow at school.
