A Reminder to Be Thankful

When I think my life is going well and that I have recognized my blessings, God is in the habit of  hitting me with more (or in this instance a plethora of more) reasons to show my gratitude. Some of the main things I have been thankful for lately have been Michael, a healthy body, a blossoming marriage, a comfortable home, a loving family, a rewarding career, a growing family of friends. All of these things are important and deserving of thanks, but today I was faced with the reality that there is more in life to be thankful for than those broad concepts.

Specifically there is more to be thankful for in my marriage than the simple fact that we "have a good marriage." Yes, I love Michael; we usually don't argue; we have the same goals and dreams. But there is more to a marriage than that. Commitment. Sacrifice. Self-denial. Faithfulness to the point of deliberately giving up my own expectations, desires, and ideals in order to better serve my husband in love.

I thought that we had learned that lesson (perhaps Michael more so than me) in the weeks and months following The Wreck. I guess I needed a reminder. Which came in the form of a short video.

Lord, may I never take for granted the specific reasons I have to thank you. May I be consistently reminded that my marriage is to be a reflection of your overwhelming love for all mankind, which is its primary purpose.
