The Farmer's Market

I'm growing basil! For a while I've been wanting to get some fresh herbs to try to grow, and this morning when I spotted the herb stand at the farmer's market it was love at first sight. It took me a while to decide which herb I wanted to grow first! There was sage, thyme, rosemary, tarragon, lemongrass, and aloe vera just to name a few. I decided to go with basil to begin with, then if I have success with these I can expand my little herb garden. After leaving the market we bought potting soil and this bright little yellow pot so I could plant my basil.
Have you ever been to your local farmer's market? This is an experience you certainly need to try. I have never been, so I was pleasantly surprised this morning when we ventured out bright and early to see what they had to offer. We got fresh picked okra; ripe, round green and purple bell peppers; sweet corn; organic eggs; tart, firm blueberries; spicy green chilies; and fresh basil. There were so many options to choose from. From new potatoes to peaches, garlic to green onions, tomatoes to turnips, and squash to spinach, everything looked so bright and tasty. They didn't have just produce, either. We also found homebaked breads, cakes, and cookies, jellies, jams, pickled veggies, potted flowers, painted gourds, and potted herbs. I was very tempted to load up on everything I saw, but my Southern Living Farmer's Market Cookbook says to only buy what you need for one week because of how quickly the food may spoil. The atmosphere was so friendly and cheerful, with smiles and nods from everyone toting canvas bags to put their purchases in. I love the fact that these fruits and veggies are grown right here in our area, contain very little preservatives, and support our local farmers. We will definitely be back next week!
